Talk about leveraging resources. Mary Erickson Community Housing partnered with The Home Depot Foundation and the City of San Clemente to complete much needed renovation work on the MECH West Canada apartments in San Clemente. The City of San Clemente provided a grant for materials, The Home Depot Foundation provided the labor for the work and assisted in getting materials donated or at reduced costs. MECH provided the coordination and move in/move out of eight tenants. Eight occupied units were renovated in only eight weeks, one unit per week. What a wonderful partnership!

The dedication of Team Home Depot was inspiring. The rehabilitation was completed by Home Depot Associates volunteering on their time off. Home Depot Project Captain Scott Aaronson went above the call of duty, starting early and working late, always with a smile. Tenants expressed their gratitude by preparing “treats” and home cooked meals for those working.
Thanks are in order for San Clemente City staff members Leslie Davis, Housing Coordinator and Denise Obrero, Contract CDBG Grant Administrator. They are truly committed to the well being of all of the citizens of the City of San Clemente.
We would particularly like to thank Board Members Bob Kabel and Kathy Loewy and MECH Project Coordinator Connie Swiderski for the countless hours involved in coordinating this effort. St. Andrew’s United Methodist Church stepped in to provide lunch for the volunteers and local businesses chipped in with donated cookies and sandwiches.

The families residing in the Canada apartments now have new flooring, toilets, paint, stoves and have had many repairs made to their apartments. The materials were selected by MECH with long term durability and maintenance in mind. |
